The Ridge

Composed and arranged by Terry Pack

The Ridge is the ancient road above and to the North of Hastings between Ore Village and Battle. It is believed to be the track that William the Conqueror and his Norman invaders marched along to Senlac (Lake of Blood), the supposed site of The Battle of Hastings in 1066. It is also home to James McMillan’s Quiet Money Studio, where I recorded the album ‘Palimpsest’ in 2009.

I wrote the opening 4/4 section of this piece prior to a trio recording session with pianist Dave Drake and drummer Dave Cottrell at Quiet Money a few years ago, and developed it for Trees last year. The form is AABA. The harmony ascends in minor thirds in the A sections, and the chord sequences in the B sections are borrowed from John Coltrane’s ‘Giant Steps’. The 11/8 section is based on a riff I’ve had for a while and been torturing the band with for about a year. Its sound is the result of a scale whose name I don’t know: a D harmonic minor with a flattened 9th.

The featured musicians are Tony Freer on oboe, Imogen Ryall, voice, Mark Edwards on synthesizer, David Beebee on electric piano, Enrico Pinna on electric guitar, Neil Corin on mallets, Andy Pickett on tenor saxophone, Paul Nieman on trombone and Mark Edwards again on Wurlitzer, Hammond and various added keyboards.
