about

Peter Peregrine is the story of a 15-year-old Anglo-Saxon peasant, living in the Sussex village of Bodiam in rural Sussex in 1197. His life is changed forever when his Norman Lord and Master, Sir William de Bodiham, joins King Richard ‘the Lionheart’ on the Third Crusade to wrest ‘The Holy Land’ from the Islamic forces
of Saladin, the Sultan of Egypt. Peter is enlisted as William’s squire. This opening piece depicts their journey from rural Sussex to Canterbury, where they pray for God’s blessing, and then to Dover, where they set sail for Calais.
As they travel south through France and Italy, the two young men become friends. Peter learns Norman French, along with many more languages and dialects. He learns to play the lute and writes songs and poems. He falls in love a few times and has his heart broken more than once. He learns to ride a horse, and how to wield a sword and a lance. He becomes a trusted confidant of William, who even learns a few words of English from his young servant. Despite his humble origins, Peter is a knight in all but name by the time the travellers reach the heel of the Italian boot.
