about

This piece is based on a rhythmic figure in 3/4 by flautist/composer Greg Maddocks. The idea came to him whilst sitting on a beach waiting for the wind to get up enough for him to go windsurfing, hence the title. The piece starts with an ostinato over two chords: D minor and A7. These are played on xylophone and marimba by Richard Horne. The bass and drums introduce a latin groove and flautist Kate Hogg improvises over the introduction and the initial statements of the theme in D minor.

After the crescendo at the end of the first part of the piece, the bass signals an abrupt harmonic shift to Eb major and a new, open section, an improvised dialogue between Tom's piano, Kate's bansuri, Milo Fell's percussion and Dave Cottrell's beautifully sensitive drumming. After this improvised section, the rhythm re-establishes the groove in Eb and the band returns with variations on and developments of the initial themes. The piece goes through several new keys: Eb major, D major and F major, before ending in E major.
