about

It is a bitterly cold Christmas night in the Crusader camp in the shadow of the landward tower. The men are more than a year into the siege. There is no end in sight.
This piece is an adaptatIon of the Carol, ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’. The title is ironic. As with ‘Be Merry’, it is another attempt to lift the spirits, but the words of encouragement and consolation are undermined by the melody, which is resolutely minor in mode and gloomy in mood. I took the second line of the carol as my title for this version.
At this point in the story, Peter the peasant squire has been made a knight and has ascended
the chain of command. Although he is still only eighteen years old, he is now an experienced
and accomplished man-at-arms and a trusted lieutenant to William. The two men have become close friends, and have spent many hours discussing life, love, music and philosophy over the past couple of years. This Christmas respite is brief, and soon the fighting resumes. William is shot by an enemy archer. The wound is serious and probably fatal. Peter is devastated.
