about

Kyrenia is a port in Northern Cyprus, whose natural harbour is protected by an imposing Crusader fortress.
It is here that William, Peter and the others first encounter ‘the enemy’, in the form of a small band of musicians who approach the fortress to issue a musical ‘challenge’ to the Crusaders.
The music depicts this musical ‘tournament’ between the best musicians in each camp. The result is a good-natured draw.
Such is the nature of this first engagement with Saladin’s followers that Peter’s band might be forgiven for thinking that the opposing forces are little more than rival groups of travelling players. If only this were true.
