Friston to Cuckmere

Music composed and arranged by Terry Pack.

The poetry is by Rudyard Kipling

This is another piece whose inspiration is the Sussex countryside. For its last few miles before the River Cuckmere meanders to the sea, the Cuckmere Valley is flanked on its Eastern side by Friston Forest.

The piece is in two parts. The first part is a simple ballad idea in A minor, the second is based on yet another bass riff, which uses the sound of E Phrygian over a 12 beat sequence. This can be felt as two bars of 6/4 or as three bars of 4/4. When writing the arrangement, I wrote it in 4/4, much to the consternation of the percussionists.

The featured musicians are Imogen Ryall, Annie Lightly, Vikki Parker and Antony Durrant, voices, Tony Freer, oboe, Matt Wilson, acoustic guitar, Phil Hudson, acoustic and electric guitars, Alice Hawkes, piano, Milo Fell, drums, Matt Hobson, orchestral and other percussion, Peter Thompson and Tim Wade bass trombones.Nick Magnus and Mark Edwards on all manner of keyboards, percussion, synths, effects and more: including ‘Chair Monster’, ‘Whale Song’ and ‘Ship’s Hull’.

lyrics

Friston to Cuckmere

Here leaps ashore the full Sou’ West
All heavy wind with brine
Here lies above the folded crest
The Channel’s leaden line
And here the sea fogs lap and cling
And here/hear each warning each
The sheep bells and the ship bells ring
Along the hidden beach

Here where the World is quiet
Here where all trouble seems dead winds
And spent waves riot in doubtful dreams of dreams
I watch the green fields growing
Reaping folk and sowing
For Harvest Time and mowing
A sleepy World of Dreams
