about

The massacre is the last straw for Peter. With the streets of Acre awash with blood and piled high with the bodies of its people, he seeks out a quiet place to consider his future.
Peter is now truly alone. He sits on a hill away from the city. His choices are stark. He could journey back to England with Richard’s victorious army. But with no real idea of what his new status as a ‘knight’ of Anglo-Saxon heritage would mean on his return, this is a fraught decision.
There is also the question of how his experience has changed him. He is no longer the peasant squire who left his home in Bodiam three years earlier. Perhaps with William’s friendship and guidance, a return to Bodiam would have been possible, but as it is, Peter’s status
is difficult to define in an era of the very rigid Feudal Order, which sees social status as divinely ordained and immutable.
Peter is no longer a simple peasant, but neither is he a true nobleman. He is a misfit in a time that does not permit such hybrid forms to exist. He is angry with William for his act of folly in joining this Crusade. His master’s decision has cost him his own life and left Peter in a cultural limbo hundreds of miles from home in enemy territory.
For obvious reasons, this short piece returns to the ‘Folly’ melody from the album’s opening piece.
