about

The two towers of the title refer to ‘The Accursed Tower’ and ‘The Tower of Flies’ that dominate the seaward and landward battlements of the city of Acre. After two gruelling and attritional years of deprivation, disease, starvation and death, the inhabitants of the city are forced to surrender, and are held to ransom by King Richard, who demands a ransom of 2,400 silver duckets from Saladin.
A ransom note is sent to Jerusalem, and Saladin sends the money, but before his messenger arrives at Acre, Richard orders the entire population of the city to be put to the sword, and over 2000 men, women and children are massacred by the Norman knights.
When Saladin’s messenger arrives a day later with the ransom, Richard murders him and keeps the money. Peter is horrified by this final act of brutality. He
sees the plight of ordinary people who are his fellow human beings: the victims of a war in which they have suffered terribly and lost loved ones. Richard and his fellow Normans see only the vanquished peasants of an inferior, heathen race. Much as they see his own family and friends at home in England. His empathy is for those who have lost everything.
