about

There is a lull in the fighting. Peter goes to William’s side. His friend is dead. Peter reflects on the last two years and how his life has been transformed since he was pressed into service as his then master’s squire in his home village. Bodiam is hundreds of miles to the north and a world away in terms of his life experience.
The two young men had found a friendship and forged a relationship that transcended their differences in status and class. William had come to see Peter as his equal, and promoted his servant to the same rank as himself in the Crusader army.
Now Peter is left to mourn the loss of his friend and to consider his place in the grand scheme of things. He finds himself alone and adrift, both in his grief and his status. His military rank is that of a knight, but socially and culturally, he is a solitary Anglo-Saxon in an army of Normans, most of whom regard him as an upstart and an interloper. To them, he is still a serf and a peasant.
As Peter grieves for his friend, the melody we hear is the one that began the opening piece.
