about

The Siege of Acre is over, and King Richard is rich. His coffers are full of the spoils
of war and Saladin’s silver duckets. The Crusader army leaves Acre and travels north, returning home to England by sea and land via the Adriatic coast and then through Austria and Germany. This piece represents their journey home, not as triumphant victors, but as world-weary war ‘veterans’.
Peter decides not to travel north with Richard’s army. Instead, he ventures south into Egypt. He spends a year travelling west through North Africa, learning new languages and meeting new people. He studies music and philosophy, poetry and theology. This is period of reflection and healing. When Peter eventually returns to Europe via the Straits of Gibraltar, he is a changed man, and wise beyond his years.
